According to the blog, “A typical notification XML is less than 1KB of data, but an image can be up to 150KB.” Windows 8 also saves bandwidth by caching images (profile photos, for example), rather than downloading them every time a friend posts an update. This process should be entirely transparent to end users, though we suspect users will still be able to choose how often updates are actually downloaded. Websites that want to push updates to Windows 8 tablets will be able to use the Windows Push Notification Service (WNS) to notify a tablet that an update has been received. Microsoft has opted to adopt a “push” model instead, much like push email on your smartphone. Constantly connecting to a website drains a tremendous amount of battery power if the polling period is rapid, while using a slow polling period kills the idea of providing instant updates. This worked fine on the desktop, but it’s less than ideal on a mobile device.
